Feira de Caruaru
Recife
The famous musician Luiz Gonzaga immortalized this marketplace with a song bearing its name. 'Of all that there is on Earth, it has for sale', says the lyrics about the Feira de Caruaru. If you pay a visit to this maze of tradition and trade, you'll find that this is not an overstatement.
The 'Feira de Caruaru' is a 200 year old fair with a staggering amount of items: handicraft, regional food, clothing articles, medicinal herbs, electronic devices and an array of goods on leather, fibres, wood and more. The fair is visited by everyone in Caruaru and the State, from everyday costumers who need to buy meat and flour, to tourists looking for Vitalino sculptures, straw hats and exotic souvenirs. Make sure you check prices before buying anything - differences between sellers can be significant.
The whole selling space occupies a 40.000 m² area, so you'll be able to find way beyond what you are looking for in this area. The hundreds of shops, stores and stands stretch for over two kilometers in town.
This bicentennial fair was declared a Cultural Heritage of Brazil in 2006.
