The Pernambuco State Museum is located in one of the finest examples 19th century architecture: a 1.200m² house in the Graças district which used to belong to a local baron. The museum was created in 1929 and it is home to an important part of Pernambuco's history.
Currently, the Museum exhibits over 14 thousand items, gathering important collections that are divided in the following categories: Archeology, Indigenous Culture, Dutch Pernambuco, Sacred Art, Afro-Brazilian Culture, Ex-Votos, Iconography, Furniture, Porcelain, Crystals and Painting, with Canvas Paintings of renowned local artists.
On the ground floor of the Espaço Cícero Dias, inaugurated in 2003, the exposition 'A legacy revisited' exhibits samples of historical patrimony under the curatorship of Emanoel Araújo. The Joaquim Cardozo auditorium hosts lectures, workshops, debates and other cultural events are held. The upper floor has the galleries for temporary expositions and a library specialized in Art and History with more than 4 thousand books, catalogues and periodicals. One of the rare volumes of the library is Gaspar Barlaeus' book, written in Latin, which narrates the history of Maurício de Nassau in Pernambuco.
