Mirante da Caixa D'água da Sé - Panoramic Elevator
Recife
The touristic place was built in 1934 and designed by Luís Nunes, a famous local architect. The 65-foot building was refurbished in 2011. The water reservoir, on the See's Hill, is a landmark of modern Brazilian architecture.
At the 20-meter-tall (66-foot-tall) building, it was installed a panoramic elevator and the place was turned into a belvedere which allows that gives to the visitor a 360-degree view of Olinda and Recife.
On the construction of the water reservoir, was used for the first time as a decoration and ventilation element. The building underwent renovation work recently inaugurated on October 24, 2011.
In the project, it was used, for the first time, modern architectural forms and modelings in a time when the concept of architecture was changing.
The use of pillars, the pure form of construction, the use of a blind façade and the other completely light perforated façade were eventually used by Oscar Nieneyer in buildings in Brasilia.
Around the building is the Alto da Sé area, another point of interest in Olinda. The area offers many shops selling local handcrafted items and stalls serving regional food.
The terrace was refurbished and in the inner spaces, there are exhibitions and activities supporting the tourist visitation. The trip is free and can be taken from 2pm to 5pm.
