Leather is a material that is tied to the very identity of Pernambuco's drylands, as most of its inhospitable outback was first occupied by herdsmen, who needed durable apparel to protect them from the thorny vegetation. Thus, it is fitting that a museum about it is located in one of the Sertão's blossoming cities: Salgueiro.
The photographies exhibited here tell the life and story of the herdsmen, who are the main characters in the arid stage of the Sertão. In the museum, guests can discover more about the usefulness of the items made out of leather, mostly from cows and goats, in an artisanal fashion: shoes, sandals, purses, bags, wallets, belts and hats of all shapes and sizes.
Furthermore, the house, where the museum is located, used to be, until the beginning of the last century, a public jail. The rooms of the exhibits were the cells.
