Embaixada de Pernambuco - Giant Dolls of Olinda
Recife
Leandro Castro is the entrepreneur and creator behind the Embaixada de Pernambuco to display around 50 of the wonderful giant dolls or heads that have become a famous of the folklore of Carnival in Olinda and Recife.
The tradition of giant dolls or puppets started in Europe probably during the Middle ages and the first doll, Ze Pereira, was created for Carnival in the interior of Pernambuco in 1919 and brought to Olinda in 1932.
Located in the heart of old town Recife since 2009, the Embaixada is designed to allow tourists and locals to experience these unique creations of local, national and international stars and public figures all year round.
Of course, the best way of all is to come back at Carnival time, to take part in Brazil's most authentic street Carnival and admire how the men carry these creations around the crowded streets in the tropical heat all day long.
Leandro started to build the collection of new dolls in 2008 which now total over 100. After crafting the figure and lifelike expressions in clay, they are moulded from glass fibre which gives durability and lightness.
