The temple was built between 1687 and 1767 in the same place of the Palace of Boa Vista, owned by Maurício de Nassau, the Dutch Governor of Brazil (XVIIth century). Next to the Basilica, there is the Church of Order Terceira (Church of Santa Teresa), built between 1710 and 1837.
There are still traces of baroque art which are still visible in some parts of the church. Is interior contains works of remarkable artistic expression.Even with the modernization of the church, you can still detect a hint of Gothic architecture which is prevalent during the 18th century.
With the regular clean up and maintenance, the life-like image of Our Lady of Carmo is still as it was when it was placed in the church centuries ago.
During one of the most popular catholic events known as the Holy Week, the church is packed with locals as well as many national and international tourists.
