Well worth the 30 minute trip to the outskirts of Recife to see this tranquil, if rather extravagant, oasis of well-kept gardens, lake and buildings. The main attractions are in the mock European castle housing valuable historical and cultural collection of paintings, documents and pieces.
The Ricardo Brennand Institute opened in 2002 with a landmark exhibition of Albert Eckhout's 17th century paintings of colonial Dutch Brazil, in Pernambuco State, many brought from Europe especially for the season.
It has grown into a leading cultural and exhibition centre for both locals and visitors alike, and is particularly unusual for being in the format of a mock castle. Mr Brennand offered it as a present and tribute to Recife and Pernambuco for his success and love for his homeland.
Apart from historical paintings, documents and pieces from the region, it also has a renowned collection of medieval armoury. It houses the largest private collection of Franz Post's works from the 17th century Dutch colonial period in Pernambuco.
New and visiting exhibitions, and even new buildings, may appear at any time.
Entry fee R$15.
Students, Teachers and Over 60's R$5 (proof of age or documentation must be shown).
