Liberdade: Strength, Resistance, and Silence

Liberdade, Sao Paulo, Recife

Did you know that before being known as a stronghold of Japanese culture, Liberdade was a territory of black resistance? On this tour, we will reveal the invisible traces of São Paulo.

This guided walking tour in Recife’s Liberdade neighborhood explores its black history and cultural resistance, ideal for history enthusiasts and culturally curious visitors.

Highlights

  • Discover the black history of Liberdade before it became a Japanese neighborhood.
  • Visit symbolic sites like the Church of the Afflicted and the Lavapés Samba School with authentic historical context.
  • Experience a tour focused on memory, awareness, and historical reconnection.

Description

The tour begins at the former Largo da Forca, now Praça da Liberdade, once a site of public executions mostly involving enslaved and rebellious Black people. Next, you will visit the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos, one of Recife’s oldest churches, which contains a hidden cemetery for the enslaved and those sentenced to death.

Walking through the narrow streets of the neighborhood, the tour highlights how historical erasure followed the arrival of the Japanese community in the early 20th century. You will see landmarks like the Lavapés Samba School headquarters, founded by Black workers and residents, symbolizing the ongoing presence and resistance of Black culture.

Throughout the tour, you will learn about overlooked historical figures, black brotherhoods, tenements, urban quilombos, and the development of Liberdade’s identity prior to its 'Orientalization.' Each stop invites reflection on the silencing and potential recovery of Black memory today.

The tour concludes at Paço dos Piques, now known as Ladeira da Memória, historically a watering stop for muleteers and enslaved people, featuring a significant fountain.
